In the new issue of the French newspaper Le Monde for February 22, 2023, an article by the special correspondent of the newspaper in Kyiv, Florence Aubenas, was published, in which comments were provided by the heads of memory institutions in Ukraine and Ukrainian historians.
The Head of the State Archival Service of Ukraine, Anatolii Khromov, notes in his comment that 60% of requests in state archives now come from people who want to look into their own history (social and historical aspects). “As a way to turn shame and pain into glory. Actually, Ukrainians are looking for their family legend, heroic figures”, — says Anatolii Khromov, the “minister of archives” of Ukraine. On November 6, 2020, Mr. Khromov presented the public database “Ukrainian martyrology of the XXth century”, which lists the victims of the repressions of 1920-1950. During this time, more than 102,000 files were registered, according to him, there should be at least 400,000, excluding the Holodomor.
