The significance of Lesya Ukrainka’s figure for the current stage of the country’s development is difficult to overestimate, because in the early twentieth century the writter’s work, based not only on the centuries-old heritage of Ukrainian history but also on the Western European literary context, appeared imminent Ukrainian literature and science to the European cultural paradigm.
A unique sketch of the famous portrait of Lesya Ukrainka by Ukrainian painter Fotiy Krasytsky was used for the poster of the new exhibition project. In 1904, a painter, who was a good friend of Ukrainka, created a portrait of her. The soft lighting with the help of church candles created a surprisingly natural image of Lesya Ukrainka, who was looking at the icon of Mykola Chudotvorets at the moment of posing. Lesya liked the portrait so much that she wanted to recreate it in 1913 in the form of a photo portrait. Yuriy Teslenko-Prykhodko became the author of the photo, and the photo he created became the last one for Lesya Ukrainka.
There are also sources dedicated to Kliment Kvitka, which allow us to reveal some pages of their lives, tell how the fate of the scientist after the death of his wife.
Particularly interest are the documents of Ukrainian emigration to European countries, Brazil, Canada, and the United States, which tell us about the publication of Lesya Ukrainka’s works, events dedicated to her memory, organized by active Ukrainian centers abroad.
